Sporting Kansas City extended their unbeaten streak in dramatic fashion Saturday night at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park when Omar Bravo headed home the equalizer in stoppage time.
Chivas USA jumped out to a lead when Nick LaBrocca scored his team leading sixth goal in the thirtieth minute. The Sporting KC defense looked frozen when Ben Zemanski and Justin Braun easily passed the ball through gaps to LaBrocca just outside the box. Kansas City keeper Jimmy Nielsen came out in an attempt to cut down the angle but LaBrocca slid the ball just inside the post.
Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes pulled Milos Stojcev and inserted Kei Kamara in the thirty-eighth minute to change things up. “My reasoning for it was that I just felt that after seeing the way we were playing, from an athletic perspective, I thought that Kei could be a major mismatch over there” Vermes explained. “I think that it was from the start of when he got in the game. He came in and changed the game some for us, especially the last few minutes of the half. I think in the second half he was definitely a monster.”
At halftime Luke Sassano came on for Julio Cesar and the Kansas City made some other adjustment that led to a change in momentum. Sporting KC started creating more chances and getting quality opportunities on goal but Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy’s strong performance kept Kansas City begging for a goal.
In stoppage time it Kansas City’s turn to take the ball all the way up the field score. Matt Besler sent the ball long where a couple Sporting KC players went high to flick it forward. The ball went in the direction of Kei Kamara slicing into the right side of the box but Chivas defender Zarek Valentin got there just ahead of Kamara. Valentin attempted to clear the ball away but it instead went across the goal to Bravo who had been coming dangerously close all second half. Bravo powerfully headed past Kennedy as the stadium erupted.
Sporting KC (5-6-7) are now unbeaten in 10 league games and 12 overall and have not lost at home.
