Some of you may have noticed that the classic downtown haunts Hi-5 and Bogarts have recently been replaced. Both restaurants are owned by Rocky Top Hospitality, who seems to have been feeling restless of late and have redone several of their restaurants. Hi-5 has been replaced by Draft, and now highlights craft beer from NC breweries. Bogarts meanwhile, has been replaced by Cantina South (http://www.cantinasouth.com/), a high-end Mexican spot and, in the tradition of Bogarts, these guys know how to do brunch!
If you missed Bogarts brunch, be sad; it was, quite literally, a feast. Happily you can find a replacement in Cantina South with an array of treats, many of which are routinely on the regular menu.
Start with a stop at the omelette bar. There’s no need to try to sell this: one look and you’ll be ready to go. There’s a variety of meats and veggies to be included in your omelette and the eggs are fluffy and delicious. If you’d rather not wait for your eggs head to the buffet line and try the Blanquillos con Salpicon de Res – scrambled eggs with shredded steak, onions, radishes, tomatoes, herbs and spices. If you’re not really in the mood for breakfast swing by the taco bar and whip something up with the delicious guacamole, fresh cilantro and various salsas. And if you need to settle your sweet tooth there’s fresh fruit with a zesty yogurt dip, fried plantains and a table of choice brownies and cakes for that final bite.
I arrived prompty at 11am, when they opened, and was pleasently surprised to find no wait (that can’t last long!) however we did have to wait about 15 minutes for the buffet to open. Even then there were several items missing from the spread and I never got to try the pancake and french toast options which didn’t make their appearance until about 11:45am. Regardless, we didn’t go hungry and the quality of the food is fantastic. In fact, for an all-you-can eat buffet this is a pretty good deal at $14.95 for adults, with kids under 7 eating for only $4.95 and under 12 are $7.95. Get there before the crowds find it – brunch buffet can be a tricky matter when the lines get long. ¡Buen apetito!
