GOP U.S. Rep. Allen West is scheduled for an appearance before the Hillsborough County Republican Party Saturday July 23, 2011. Rep. Allen West, has without question, attracted national attention of the on-going feud between Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and himself.
West, who represents District 22 in South Florida will speak at a dinner meeting at the Arthur Boring Civic Center on the Strawberry Festival grounds in Plant City. According to the Hillsborough County Republican Party Chairman Debbie Cox Roush, West was already a huge draw before the feud began. The Wasserman Schultz incident has increased his support amongst his party even more so.
This past Tuesday, West spoke on the House floor in favor of the cut, cap and balance proposal and left the floor. Wasserman Schultz, also of South Florida but District 20 took the floor and criticized West and the Tea Party backed proposal. She stated that West from South Florida as herself, who represents thousands of Medicare recipients, should never back a plan that would increase the cost for Medicare beneficiaries in favor of protecting tax breaks for big oil millionaires and companies who ship jobs overseas. West sent her a hostile email telling her summarily she was: vile, despicable, unprofessional, not a lady and to speak to him face to face if she has something to say to him.
Wasserman Schultz’s compassion for the many she represents compelled her to call West out while she had the floor. It may have been the right thing to say for the Medicare recipients well being, it was the wrong place. The proposal is not an Allen West created proposal, it is a Tea Party and GOP ideological scheme to withdraw money from the only solvent department of the federal government and that is the $2.6 trillion on hand in the Social Security trust fund and the $6.5 trillion of its projected funds for solvency.
It is a tragic form of misuse and irresponsibility to even propose such a plan by anyone, yet Wasserman Schultz and West are referred to as honorable and distinguished while serving on the floor and ethics should rule at all times. West’s response was impulsive and repulsive because he felt she took a cheap shot at him after he yielded the floor, he reacted with hostility from an already non-cordial relationship.
The West speech in Plant City will no doubt have reference to the feud and charge up the base with Tea Party and GOP ideologies. There is a political prize to win for West and the party he represents who are loyal to their pledge of no tax increase on the wealthiest.
Both parties believe with certainty they are winners and have the right and only way to lead America, yet leadership fails to even have ethical codes instilled in them to debate and discuss solutions without repugnance. The American people are moving closer to impatience and time is moving closer to August 2. There are few winners in a recession and even fewer in a Depression.
