Makeup artist Sonia Kashuk, and Target, want women to have access to great makeup at affordable prices, and more than that, she wants you to know how to apply it properly. She has worked on editorial assignments for magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure, Elle and Glamour, just to name a few, and has collaborated with designers such as Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta and Betsey Johnson for their runway shows. In 1999 the Sonia Kashuk beauty brand was created in partnership with Target stores. Her goal was to make a “mass-tige” brand that women could easily access, understand, and afford. I remember one of earlier items. It was a face-in-a-case palette in different color tones, with so many items, so nicely packaged, I couldn’t believe they were all in one kit, let alone for under $25.00. And the quality was excellent. Sonia Kashuk and Target got my attention, and I’ve been a fan, ever since.
Sonia Kashuk’s own website http://soniakashuk.com has plenty of how-tos and videos. But even seasoned beauty writers can learn a trick or two, and a select group of us did, in a class personally taught by Sonia Kashuk’s at the Target studio in NYC. There’s nothing more exciting than being led, step by step, through a complete makeup application by a master makeup artist, and having all the products and tools to do it right. At Sonia Kashuk’s Makeup 101 Class, editors watched Sonia Kashuk remove her own makeup, and then re-apply a complete look right in front of us, and close-up on big screens. We did the same. I have to admit to a bit of intimidation and the sheer numnber of products and brushes on the worktables in front of us. There were a lot more than I’d normally use, but the point was to learn what you can do, and how. The result was pretty amazing (see the top photo).
First, we selected a Sonia Kashuk foundation (powder, liquid or tinted moisturizer) to suit our skin tone (there were experts to help us select), along with either Sonia Kashuk’s Neutral Eye Shadow Palette (02) or the new, “Eye on Fall” Eye Shadow Palette (03).
Using products available at Target, we cleansed our faces with the very effective “Yes to Blueberries Brightening Facial Towelettes, $7.99″ and Sonia Kashuk’s Remove Eye Makeup Remover, $9.99. Next step, prepare your face as you would a canvas, with Yes to Blueberries Daily Repairing Moisturizer with SPF 30, $19.99, and Sonia Kashuk’s Primer Vitamin Serum, $17.99. Then the fun part begins..makeup colors!Although I tend to work in my eyes first, we actually applied our choice of blush products before focusing on the eyes. I’d always assumed you simply applied products in order of where your facial features were, first foundation, then eyes, blush and lips. But putting on the blush first made it easier to adjust the intensity of the eye and lip colors we chose. I now apply foundation and concealing products, then blush and highlighter, then eyes and lips. I also learned more about some of the mystifying sizes and shapes of makeup brushes out there on the market. Sonia Kashuk has several extensive, affordable collections at Target, including some hair, some synthetic. Many women just have a shadow brush, and one for blush, perhaps one for powder or eye liner and assume this is all they need. Perhaps, but while you can use the same brush for several different applications, specifically using the right ones at the right time can really make a difference in how your finished makeup looks.
Getting a great makeup result has a lot to do with patience, technique, and chosing the right formulas and colors for your skin, but good beauty products needn’t cost a fortune. Sonia Kashuk, and Target, has made easy beauty, affordable!
