According to the Miami Herald, singer and actress, Solange Knowles, was in an altercation in Miami Sunday night, the very same night that her film and music star sister, Beyonce Knowles announced her pregnancy to the world at the MTV Video Music Awards in dramatic fashion.
Apparently, the younger Knowles was denied admittance to club Cameo because she was carrying a giant, 5-foot inflatable banana. After she was turned away, Knowles then began to rant about how she was being racially discriminated against. An off-duty officer took Knowles across the street to explain the situation to her.
This is where the story gets hazy. According to Knowles via twitter the officer pulled a weapon on her after she was taken aside. “A police officer just pulled a weapon on me…. I have done NOTHING illegal, against the law, or anything of the sort,“ said Knowles adding, “I’m only tweeting this to raise awareness. I could have left quietly, but I am sick & tired of this scenario being played over & over again.” Knowles rep revealed the rest the story to E! News.
“They (Knowles and two friends) decided to go across the street to deflate the balloon, where they encountered two police officers who had casual, light-hearted conversation with them,” said Knowles rep. “One officer pulled out a switchblade and threatened to pop the balloon. They felt it was inappropriate, but the turning point happened when he then took out the switchblade a second time with the blade open and said to them, ‘I don’t find the humor in this, anymore.’ The blade was less than a couple feet away from Solange and her friends.”
The Miami Police department released a statement denying the altercation ever occurred since this incident occurred in Miami Beach and falls under the Miami Beach Police Department’s jurisdiction. “Over the weekend, the lion’s share of the mainstream and entertainment media reported that the Miami Police Department had a confrontation with Solange Knowles, the sister of Beyonce Knowles of record and movie fame. We have investigated and found that this incident DID NOT occur in our city,” said Delrish Moss, Miami Police Department spokesman and Commander according to the Miami Herald and the Huffington Post. E! News! was able to obtain a statement from the actual police department in question.
“The whole entire incident was about the fact that she was not allowed in a club. When she became abusive, she was pulled to the side. There was no mention of a gun. Considering it might be an internal investigation I can’t tell you much other than that,” said Det. Juan Sanchez of the Miami Beach Police Department.
So, in the end we have 2 different versions of the same event. It is unclear whether this unfortunate event will have any reflection on the older Knowles but it’s a good sign that news of Beyonce’s pregnancy broke twitter records posting 8,868 tweets per second.
As for Solange, it seems that she has assigned herself the role of freedom fighter for all of those racially discriminated against by the police. The problem is that she appointed herself that role which makes her credibility questionable. It’s unclear whether her sister’s celebrity played a part in this altercation or whether there was racism involved or not.
However it cannot be ignored that some injustice might have occurred at the hands of the Miami Beach Police Department. If there was a weapon drawn, then it certainly should be seen as excessive force. Neither Knowles nor her friends were carrying a weapon and if the officer had attempted to deflate the balloon, there are better ways of handling the situation without drawing a weapon.
In either case, let’s remember that this altercation is over a giant inflatable banana, not racism or excessive force. This is not an issue of world peace and no marches are going to be in Solange Knowles’ honor to rectify the injustice that she allegedly suffered. Let’s all focus on happier things like Beyonce’s pregnancy, the thing that Sunday night should have been all about.
