Sleep is the natural healer and rejuvenator for all creatures on earth. With out sleep our bodies and minds would decay rapidly. After a long hard day of mental or physical strain, sleep, or just simply napping, will rejuvenate both mind, and body. But there is also a prime time for sleeping. Studies suggest between 10 pm, and 2 am are the peak hours of healing. A recent study in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine showed that if you sleep less than seven hours a night, you have a three times higher risk of getting a cold than if you sleep more than eight hours. There is a famous quote by Benjamin Franklin, “Early to bed, and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. “ So don’t be afraid to go to bed early thinking you might miss something, everything should still be there in the morning, hopefully! Following the sun, following the birds, and following nature’s natural circadian (day-night) rhythm is the natural cycle that should be followed. Like the old school farmers who go to bed at 7 pm, and are up at 4 am seem to have the schedule down, and most of them live a very long time. For the sleep deprived humans of planet earth, there are natural remedies to enhance your long awaited super comfy, and cool pillow time. Honey is a natural sleep aid. Honey will act as a sedative to the nervous system. Honey also absorbs moisture from your body, which in turn alleviates the middle of the night bathroom sessions. Chamomile, and Valerian root are also natural sedatives. Reading a book, and meditative calm breathing techniques are also healthy avenues to pursue. One should avoid the late night computer, and television use! Deepak Chopra’s book Perfect Health is a good place to start. Dr. Chopra’s knowledge as both endocrinologist and ayurvedic physician is presented in several books including Return of the Rishi, Creating Health, Quantum Healing, and Ageless Body, Timeless Mind.
