Whether it is in Phoenix or in Washington DC, government gets hostile when it comes to cutting their goodies. What is it about this Phoenix government that is totally unaware at how bad the economy is out in the real world? Reading the accounts of the salary increases, bonuses and perks you get the impression that government and its employees are simply saying that the taxpayer better pay up no matter if the taxpayer can pay or not. Back when the Phoenix City council voted for a 2% food tax we were told that would be for fire and police compensation only to find out later that the money was used for immediate pay increases for city employees. Government comes first and makes no sacrifices so you ordinary Americans get over it. Isn’t this how the United Sates was born by rebelling against a tyrannical government? We now have tyrannical government in our back yard of Phoenix..
It also seems that the Phoenix government takes its playbook from government in Washington, DC. Employees there simply do not do without either. They get pay increases, 100% coverage of health care, fully funded pensions year in and year out. It is comical to hear government employees whine about how they make 3.2% concessions in future increases. Wow! They agreed to a whole 3.2%. these people are really, really generous.Nothing gets cut and they still whine while nearly 20% of America is unemployed. The 20% unemployed have made 100% concessions in their pay indefinitely.
In the last few weeks we have been deluged by news conferences from President Obama about the debt ceiling fight in Washington, DC. The big mantra is shared sacrifice, shared sacrifice, shared sacrifice.
Americans know about shared sacrifice. Do politicians in Washington know about shared sacrifice? Apparently the devastation in the economy has missed Washington, DC politicians. They do not believe in sharing in the sacrifice. Their net worth has gone up on average 3,669%.
When Obama, Boehner, Pelosi, Reid, McCain, Schumer et al. suggest shared sacrifice it does not apply to them. It only applies to you. Throughout this entire 2 ½ years have the above politicians missed a weekly paycheck? No. Have they missed a doctor’s appointment for lack of health insurance? No. Have their pensions been affected in any way? No.
Where exactly is the sacrifice on their end that they expect the rest of Americans to absorb? The president’s proposals and the establishment politician proposal make sure that there are zero sacrifices on their part. Wasn’t it a few weeks ago that the president gave his White House staff 50% increases in salary? How is this a shared sacrifice?
Didn’t we learn that Nancy Pelosi’s wealth went up by tens of millions of dollars in this on-going recession depression? Yes we did.
Finally, in the spirit of shared sacrifice Obama has increased the Federal yearly budget by trillions. Every year the budget is increased automatically by 7%. This is called baseline budgeting which was the brainchild of Richard Nixon back in 1974. In the wranglings over what to cut, politicians are very cunning because their cuts come from future increases not from actual cuts in the spending. Since we are projected to increase the budget deficits by at least $10 trillion over the next 10 years, the Washington insiders are representing the trillions in cuts as cuts in future increases not in actual cuts in real government spending. If they say there are $3 trillion in cuts over ten years what it means is that there will be $7 trillion in increases not $10 trillion. There are no cuts.
Look at it this way. Let’s say you have not seen a person you know in a year. You see him again and he looks like he has gained 100 pounds. You remark this to him and he says that in reality he has lost 25 pounds. You look at him and ask how that can be. He explains that over the last year he was projected to have gained 100 pounds but instead he only gained 75 pounds. This therefore means he has lost 25 pounds. That is what a budget cut means in Washington. Cuts are always viewed off of future increases not cuts in operating costs. That is baseline budgeting.
When you read that credit rating agencies are going to downgrade the credit worthiness of the US Government, it is because they see no real cuts in the government’s operating costs. That is why the government is being downgraded because it is making no cuts in operating costs. It keeps increases it spending. Incidentally, a balanced budget amendment would get rid of this smoke and mirrors once and for all.
This means that Obama-Pelosi-Reid-Boehner-McCain et al. do not do without. There is no sacrifice on their end. They get paid on time. They get their health insurance whenever they need it paid at 100%. Their pensions are always funded. Federal workers do not sacrifice either. The Federal government does not sacrifice. They just keep squeezing more and more money out of ordinary Americans because they never cut hard costs. They simply make a few cuts here and there on future increases. Is it any wonder that nearly 50% of Americans believe that members of congress are criminals.
That in Washington, DC or in Phoenix, Arizona is called shared sacrifice.
