Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said today that the Senate will be in session everyday “until Congress passes legislation” on the debt ceiling in order to prevent “the United States from defaulting on our obligations.”
“The Senate has no more important task than making sure the United States does not fail to pay our bills for pre-existing obligations like Social Security for the first time in our history. To ensure that we meet this responsibility, the Senate will stay in session every day, including Saturdays and Sundays, from now until Congress passes legislation that prevents the United States from defaulting on our obligations.”
Republicans in both the House and Senate insist on budget cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Education, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While at the same time they refuse to allow new revenue streams that would come by closing exploited tax loopholes, ending subsides to the oil industry, ending tax breaks for corporations that create jobs outside of the United States, and they refuse to allow the tax rates for millionaires and billionaires to go from the current 35 percent (Bush tax rates) to the previous rate of 39 percent (Clinton tax rates).
Republicans voted seven times to double the debt ceiling under George W. Bush, and never demanded the cuts in the debt ceiling legislation then, that they are currently insisting on now. And they knew then as they know now, that defaulting on our debt would be disastrous for the United States economy.
Earlier this month Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) said he is willing to allow the United States to default:
“We’re at the point where there would have to be some, you know, some serious disruptions in order not to raise [the debt ceiling],” he said. “I’m willing to do that.”
And he’s not alone, several right wing extremists in both the House and Senate have echoed DeMint’s sentiments.
Republicans openly say that they’re willing to allow the US to default on its debt, destroy the US economy, and allow the consequences that would follow. And in doing so, Republicans are also willing to allow Americans too suffer, in the hopes that the suffering will result in votes for their party in 2012, as they try and place all the blame on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress for our sour economy.
As you can see, Republicans put their careers and their Party, ahead of American citizens and the United States of America.
