A group of hackers who call themselves “Scriptkiddies” have claimed responsibility for hacking the Twitter account @foxnewspolitics and posting Tweets regarding President Obama’s unfortunate demise this Fourth of July. The series of tweets included messages that President Obama was assassinated and that some offered encouragement to Joe Biden as he would assume the role of presidency. Rest assured, President Obama has not been assassinated and is planning to spend the Fourth of July by hosting a barbecue for military members and their families that will culminate with remarks by the President and fireworks over the South Lawn.
The first ominous tweet read, “@BarackObama has just passed. Nearly 45 minutes ago, he was shot twice in the lower pelvic area and in the neck; shooter unknown. Bled out.”
The second tweet revealed a location where the supposed shooting was to occur, “@BarackObama shot twice at Ross’ restaurant in Iowa while campaigning. RIP Obama, best regards to the Obama family.”
One message encouraged users to retweet the messages as a way of showing solidarity behind the first family, “#ObamaDead, it’s a sad 4th of July. RT to support the late president’s family, and RIP. The shooter will be found.
Finally, the last message posted before the offending twitter account was suspended read, “We wish @joebiden the best of luck as new President of the United States. In such a time of madness, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
Gizmodo captured tweets from @TheScriptKiddie before their suspension claiming ownership of the messges “Fox news politics hacked by the scriptkiddies! http://t.co/6yZDcTS more embarrassment for FoxNews is imitate.”
A second account was enacted and promptly suspended but not before the group sent another tweet, “”Our old twitter was suspended @TheScriptKiddie here is the new, hopefully permanent, address. @FoxNewsPolitics just hacked.”
Since the embarrassing hack during the early morning hours of July 4, 2011, Fox News http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/07/04/foxnewspolitics-twitter-feed-hacked/ released a statement, distancing themselves from the tweets.
“FoxNews.com’s Twitter feed for political news FoxNewspolitics, was hacked early Monday morning.
Hackers sent out several malicious and false tweets claiming that President Obama had been assassinated. Those reports are incorrect, of course, and the president is spending the July 4 holiday with his family.
The hacking is being investigated, and FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.”
