Once again the Detroit and Windsor, Canada-based Rovers Vintage Scooter Club is organizing one of the Midwest’s better-attended rallies – Motor City Shakedown. It takes place in Detroit near the beginning of August every year (August 5-7) and this year promises to be a thriller. The theme this year is “Rally in New Detroit”, borrowing the name of the city where the action in the movie “RoboCop” takes place. You may recall the movie in all of its 1980’s glory – good cop gets “killed” by the bad guys, but is rebuilt by a corrupt corporation and city government and changed into a half-robot, half-human creation called RoboCop. Eventually he is almost killed again but miraculously comes out on top and manages to save Detroit and get rid of the various city and corporate baddies. The movie was largely shot in Dallas and Los Angeles, but its corrupt heart was set in Old Detroit (the bad one). The corporate guys were giving up on Old Detroit and creating New Detroit and that’s where MCS 7 comes in.
The rally will feature lots of the typical rally fun, meeting old and new friends, enjoying scooter rides around the city, and dining and dancing. A new twist is that the rally offers dedicated (and included) lodging in the heart of Corktown, at the new Hostel Detroit. Rally HQ is at the hostel and the Rovers have rented out the whole place for the weekend.
Eager rally-goers will start to arrive on Friday, and will want to settle in and get comfortable for a mind-blower of a weekend. Friday night starts out at the Third Street Saloon in Detroit, where all sorts of mayhem will probably be encountered. Food and refreshments will be present with the requisite old-school music provided by a Rovers DJ. Remember to take it easy, because after all, it is New Detroit. Also, Tiki bar.
Survivors from Friday night’s shindig will form up at the Hostel Detroit to partake of the world-famous Rover breakfast. Soon after, all will saddle up and head out on the 65-mile rally ride. The Rally ride will chart a course across all of Detroit-proper, touring New Detroit on two wheels. Possible stops include: Belle Isle, the Dorais Velodrome (home of ThunderDrome), the Heidelberg Project, the Dequindre Cut and a mystery stop mid-way through. Keep it safe on the ride, so they don’t have to re-make you in the style of RoboCop.
The Saturday evening destination is Corktown’s famous Lager House (also known as P.J.’s Lager House) where funk meets metal and the unexpected happens! The venue is located a short distance from Hostel Detroit so who knows what will happen. At the Lager House, the Rovers and guests will be drinking and dancing the night away – plus raffling off some killer scooter themed gear, and of course, their version of the 6000 SUX (RoboCop reference) – a 1973 Vespa 150 Super!
Sunday is when all the pieces are picked up, slapped together and sent on their way. Oh, there might be time for a quick breakfast or a long goodbye, but that’s it! At least until this time next year.
Rally season is the best time of the year to be a scooterist, and if you can, try to get out to a local rally. It’s even better if you can get away for a weekend to a rally in another part of the US… say, Detroit, perhaps? See you soon.
