After a strong start by Doug Fister (7.2 innings, one earned run and six strikeouts) and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Ramon Santiago’s solo home run lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals in ten innings last night at Comerica Park.
“I knew I hit it hard, but I was running as fast as I could because I wasn’t sure where it was going to end up,” Santiago told reporters after the game. “Once I saw it go out, I wanted to enjoy it, because you don’t get to do that very often.”
Joaquin Benoit (4-3) picked up the win after pitching in the ninth and tenth inning while Aaron Crow (3-4) picked up the loss after giving off the home run to Santiago. The same two teams will go at it again this afternoon in the third of a four game series. The Tigers will send Rick Porcello (12-8) to the hill while Kansas City will counter with Felipe Paulino (2-10). Heading into game play today, Detroit holds a five game lead over the Chicago White Sox and a five and a half game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the A.L. Central.
