If you are a lover of the beach but tend not to visit Virginia Beach in the summer because of the extreme number of people on the sand, there is a superb alternative, Sandbridge. Sandbridge is technically part of Virginia Beach but offers a more peaceful coastal experience. You may think you are in a different state when you arrive there because the feeling of calm immediately envelops you. There are no hotels or resorts only beach houses and a few condos that anchor each end of the strip. It gives all of the great sand, waves, and dolphin watching of VA Beach minus the commercialism and heavy tourism.
At the far end of Sandbridge, a fishing pier is available for fishers but don’t forget your salt water fishing license as it will be checked at the entrance. A very large parking lot is located near the pier on the far side of the large condo complex. There are lots of restrooms and a bathhouse along with a couple of playgrounds for the children. You may access the beach from this area where there is a volleyball net or travel down Sandfiddler Road and park in an access area where more privacy on the beach can be found.
At the south end of Sandbridge sits Back Bay Wildlife Refuge. There is a visitor center and easy walking trails that amble through the wetlands. Just before sunset is a beautiful time to visit Back Bay however the refuge closes at dark.
Sandbridge Beach is 2 hours travel time from Richmond, VA on a perfect day, 3 hours with beach traffic. Click here for directions. Happy day tripping!!
