Parking violations, petty theft and assorted “minor crime” calls will be taking a backseat going forward with the San Jose Police Department. A seriously declining economy has further taxed a shrinking and weary police force as this has been going on for quite some time.
This Police Department has fewer officers today than it did two decades ago, and the department has seen an officer reduction of nearly 20% over the in the past 2 years. (1,395 in 2009 compared to 1,106 at this time) These cuts, which included the trimming of 165 additional officers in June, come at a time where San Jose is on pace to see its highest homicide total since 2001.
Deputy Chief David Cavallaro has recently said “we must prioritize what we can and can’t do.” We are trying to find a balance between the community’s needs and the officers we have remaining.”
The force appreciates your help, understanding and patience during this very difficult time of transition.
