A great way to combat neighborhood crime is to know your neighbors. And National Night Out, which will be celebrated on August 2, is a great place to start. Meet new neighbors, learn more about crime prevention resources, and have a good time!
Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is now in its 28th year. According to their web site, “Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2010.”
From 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm on Tuesday, August 2nd, many neighborhoods throughout San Jose will be hosting local activities including block parties, BBQs, and ice cream socials, in partnership with the community, the Police Department, and the City of San Jose. For example, in one San Jose neighborhood near Townsend Park, there will be a resource fair with children’s activities and an outdoor showing of Toy Story 3. Sounds like a good time for the whole family!
If you are not sure if anything is planned for your neighborhood, you can contact the SJ Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit at (408) 277-4133 to see if a neighborhood activity has been registered.
