One of San Francisco’s finest Japanese restaurants, Kyo-ya is celebrating its’ 20th Anniversary in August. Kyo-ya opened in 1991 as a new addition to the Palace Hotel after the historic renovation was completed. It has been recognized as one of San Francisco’s premier Japanese restaurants ever since.
Kyo-ya hosted a 20th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday night for notable Bay Area chefs, food critics, style arbiters, journalists and two prominent magazine publishers. Guests were treated to a reception with Japanese delicacies accompanied by Kyo-ya house Sake. A five-course dinner followed with special Sake pairing with each course. Tamiko Ishidate, Sake purveyor from Young’s Market described the nuances of each of the Sakes served during the evening. Throughout the dinner there was a sense of anticipation and celebration as guests waited to see what surprises were in store.
Each of the courses was a work of art and a pleasure to eat. See Slideshow for photos of each of the courses in the artfully prepared meal. Leading the culinary team are Executive Chef Kunihiko Oshikawa and Master Sushi Chef Akifusa Tonai – both of whom have been with Kyo-ya since its’ opening. The award-winning team is known for creating innovative cuisine that is a blend of Japanese tradition and California style. Guests were appreciative of their expertise as evidenced by the beautiful and creative menu served at the dinner. The culinary team performed their responsibilities flawlessly and with great pride.
