Anyone who grew up in or spent their childhood or any part of their life on the Indian Subcontinent or is familiar with Indian food knows how loved the savory pastry called a samosa is to people of all faiths in the area – both vegetarian and meat-filled varieties!
However, the latest in the Muslim world is that the Al-Shabaab, extremist Islamic group that controls much of Somalia, has reportedly banned samosas in the already famine-stricken and war-torn East African nation.
Reportedly the samosa ban, announced via loudspeaker, was put in place because the Al-Shabaab leaders decided the samosa’s triangular shape was too closely associated with the Christian trinity – namely, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
Anyone caught with samosas will be faced with severe punishment for cooking, buying or eating the vegetable or meat filled varieties!
But there’s even more trouble with samosas as reportedly some New Jersey Hindus have sued a restaurant for purposely serving them meat samosas. However, it can be possible that some Hindus do eat red or any other meat!
Some of us who love Indian food will eat samosas any which way they’re served – thick or thin skinned – even with pork!
Samosas come in two main varieties, the crispy pastry beef mince-filled variety and the puffy pastry potato and pea-filled variety, heavy on the cumin. It’s also perfectly fine to eat them with ketchup if you don’t have the green or brown chutneys at hand!
