Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is celebrating the 100th birthday of its namesake famous tattoo artist with a special issue of three commemorative bottles displaying his iconic flash artwork. The rum brand, owned by William Grant & Sons, is also kicking off “Hold Fast” — a season long celebration of the man who started it all — tattoo artist Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins.
The limited edition collector’s edition bottles feature the bald eagle, the mermaids and the sparrows, among the most popular of his iconic old school tattoo designs. The suggested retail price for the limited edition bottles is $17.50.
Regarded as the greatest skin pigment artist of all time and a true innovator of the genre, Sailor Jerry was born in 1911. He expanded the color palette of modern day tattooing with the creation of purple ink, and his custom-built tattoo machines are still revered today. His independent spirit and desire to elevate tattooing made him one of the first American tattoo artists to correspond directly with the Japanese tattoo masters, which led to the development of Sailor Jerry’s own unique, artistic style that changed American tattooing forever.
Sailor Jerry’s work, which tells the raw, layered story of war and heartache, is permanently etched on the bodies of thousands of men and continues to inspire modern tattoo artistry today.
As they hit the road with a fleet of custom Airstreams, Sailor Jerry’s “Hold Fast” tour will visit tattoo fests, biker rallies, music festivals and points between, throwing parties to celebrate the spirit of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins and finding and honoring the people, many decorated with his signature style flash, who live a life that would make him proud. Coinciding with the 100 Year Anniversary of the man’s birth, “Hold Fast” will seek out the people, places and passions that embody his steadfast spirit of rebelliousness and his dedication to his craft, and feature them in an upcoming series of mini documentaries.
The Hold Fast concept comes directly from the man’s artwork itself and implies the idea of holding on to your values, your honor, your independence, your integrity — in the face of pressures that want you to be like everyone else.
