What happens when a crazy cat lady gets married? Well, most of her friends probably pinch themselves to make sure they’re not still asleep, right? We guess we shall see. Because in the season premiere of Rules of Engagement, that is exactly what happens for Liz (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and Russell (David Spade). Record scratch; wait, what? The man-child took some baby-steps toward adulthood last season, mostly because he had to when he was cut off from mommy, but this is a big leap!
“My character, Liz– the lactose intolerant cat lady– sort of accidentally marries David Spade’s character,” McLendon-Covey shared with LA TV Insider Examiner when we visited the Los Angeles set of Rules.
“Obviously things happen when you get loaded. You’re on vacation; you get loaded; the moon is looking gorgeous; you’re surrounded by “red hat” ladies; what else are you going to do?”
Liz and Russell then give it a go, but mostly, according to McLendon-Covey, because “she won’t leave.”
“She refers to Russell as the father to her children. I think she’s sunk her claws– and her teeth– into him, and she won’t let go…Russell just wants to get it annulled, but Liz is having none of that. She’s moving in; she’s changing her name on her driver’s license!” McLendon-Covey laughed.
While things may be looking up for Liz, not everyone sees the wedding as a happy time. Liz wants to double date with Jeff and Audrey, but series star Megyn Price told us that Jeff and Audrey are “fairly horrified” by the relationship. Jeff, especially takes issue with Russell’s shift in behavior.
So far McLendon-Covey has signed on for seven episodes of the sixth season of Rules of Engagement, so though they may have an attraction now, it may prove to be temporary. You can hear McClendon-Covey chat about what attracts Liz and Russell to each other, working back in television, and if there is a chance at a big-screen sequel to one of her beloved ensemble comedies (**be advised the audio is low so it is an interview best listened to with headphones) in our video chat to the left.
Rules of Engagement moves to Saturday nights at 8pm on Saturday September 24th. Want to hear what the other couples are up to this season? Stick around right here for more on-the-set interviews coming soon!
