Padres 7, River Cats 3
Friday, July 1
The River Cats waited till the ninth inning to show any signs of offensive life and by then it was much too late as they fell to the Tucson Padres 7-3 on Friday night at Raley Field.
The fourth consecutive loss marks the longest losing streak of the season for Sacramento.
Eric Sogard led off with a single to left field in the bottom half of the ninth with the River Cats down 7-0. Daric Barton followed with a walk and Wes Timmons singled back to the pitcher to load the bases for Kevin Kouzmanoff who doubled home the first two runs of the game for Sacramento. Michael Taylor hit into a fielder’s choice to third base that scored another run but the Padres were happy to trade the run for an out. Anthony Recker struck out swinging and Jai Miller grounded out to end the mini-threat.
Left fielder Kyle Blanks went 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Padres. His double to left field in the third inning scored two. Former River Cat Eric Patterson added a two-run home run in the sixth inning for the visitors.
Padres starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc (7-1) completely shut down the River Cats offense, allowing no runs on just two hits over 8.0 innings. He struck out six and walked one in his win for Tucson. Evan Scribner recorded the final two outs and collected his ninth save of the season.
Carlos Hernandez (4-3) gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits over 5.0 innings for Sacramento. Justin Souza in relief faired no better allowing three earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.
Sacramento looks to get back on track with nine games remaining before the all-star break. After the final two home games against Tucson they head to Fresno for three games and then to Las Vegas to play the second place 51s who currently trail the River Cats by 6.5 games in the Pacific South Division.
Saturday 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field, Sacramento (DiNardo 2-4) vs. Tucson (Leicester 3-3). Series continues Sunday 6:35 p.m. (Sutter Health Post-game Fireworks both nights).
