Noir – Crime Fiction featuring hard-boiled, cynical characters and bleak, sleazy settings. Akashic Books has an ongoing Noir series where each book is set in a different city. All the short stories in that book are based in that city. One of their recent additions, Cape Cod Noir, puts a new twist on the favorite vacation spot.
In the first story, an ex-con tries to lead a straight life and goes back to Cape Cod to work in a kitchen and save his money. However, when his shady boss beats the crap out of one of his coworkers, he realizes that he can’t stand by while his friends get hurt. Mentally preparing himself for the road ahead, he plans his revenge.
In another story, a woman reminisces about her college days. She remembers the summer she spent on the Cape where a friend attacked her, she fell in love, and someone committed murder.
A man plots revenge on a former boss for laying him off. As he sneaks into the Cape during the offseason, he’s haunted by memories from his past, his fears for the present, and his hopes for the future.
In The Exchange Student, a teenage Danish boy is sent to live with a family on the Cape. The parents don’t talk much; the son likes drugs and fast cars, while the daughter flaunts her body and talks down to him. When the news about the son’s death reaches the family, the whole dynamic changes and the boy gets much, much closer to the girl.
These stories, and more, illustrate the underbelly of a place that’s known for polo shirts, Presidential vacations and money. Each story is an original written by the author, and each story has a distinct voice and attitude.
It’s not surprising that a publishing company as edgy as Akashic was able to produce an award-winning series like this one. From Brooklyn to Rome, Pittsburgh to San Francisco, no major city is safe from the Noir Series.
You can find these books at any of Tulsa’s local book stores: Barnes Noble, Borders and Gardners.
