Columbia, TN will get a new employer/business early next year. Chick-fil-A has found a location and is waiting for the state transportation approval on construction according to a local newspaper article. Columbia Assistant City Engineer, Glenn Harper, is quoted saying, “the Tennessee Department of Transportation has to approve work that’s being done in a state right of way along James Campbell.” Chick-fil-A is a growing franchise chain. It is widely known for its billboards of cows promoting chicken instead of beef. Also, the restaurants are known for their Christian roots and being closed on Sundays. Sundays are days for employees to have time with family and rest from work. Other businesses have this practice such as Hobby Lobby.
God established the teaching of setting apart a day of rest. The Jewish culture celebrates the Sabbath day on Saturday while most Christian believers celebrate on Sunday. However, the scripture gives the first appearance during the creation.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” (Genesis 2:1-3)
God does not need the rest that a human body needs. He set aside the day for humans so they could take a break from working, creating, and everything that causes one to exert brainpower. The Sabbath was a point of contention between Jesus and the Pharisees. The Pharisees had some strict rules of what constituted work on the Sabbath. They did not want Jesus healing or performing any miracles on that day. It was probably one of the reasons that they sought for His demise.
Exodus 20:8-11 teaches it as a commandment that prohibits labor on that day. “Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or kill?…..” (Mark 3:4) Doing what is good on the Sabbath is far better than doing evil. A day of rest is a good practice for all the reasons mentioned in above including a time of reflection and attending a Church service. Also, it is a time to follow Jesus’ example and do the right thing for someone else. Believer, rest and do good!
