For the first time in their 50-year history the New York Mets (54-51) swept the Cincinnati Reds (50-55) by a final of 10-9 on Thursday afternoon.
Leading the way in the four-game sweep was the red-hot offense of New York, who finished with 14 hits in the game.
The Mets used two four-run innings to assist struggling starter Chris Capuano to his ninth victory this season. Not helping ‘Cap’s’ cause was the pinch-hit homer given up by Manny Acosta in the bottom of the sixth, which cut into the Mets lead making the game 9-7 at the time.
Cincinnati scored another run in the bottom of the seventh to make the game 9-8. New York was able to plate a run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth, before a Joey Votto homer in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to 10-9.
Closer Jason Isringhausen slammed the door on the Reds, with a sandwich of two fly outs and a strike out…giving the Mets their first franchise series sweep of the Reds.
It was thanks to the red-hot bats of New York that saved the game for New York, as several players recorded multiple-hits.
Having his biggest day in a Mets uniform is newly-minted right fielder Lucas Duda, who ripped a three-run double (7) in the top of the fifth-which gave New York the 9-3 lead at the time.
Jason Bay had a slump-busting day going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI’s…also having a three hit day were David Wright and Angel Pagan.
New York will now complete this road-stretch with a three-game set in Washington, D.C. Game One on Friday will feature rookie-sensation Dillon Gee (9-3, 3.75 ERA) taking on former Yankees-starter Chien-Ming Wang-who is returning from right shoulder surgery.
Wang had the same type of surgery as Mets ace Johan Santana, so many people are interested to see how the righty fares in his first start with the Nationals…and use it as a benchmark of what to expect when Santana returns. The first pitch for the opener against the Nationals is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Beltran Deal is official: The Mets made the Carlos Beltran trade to San Francisco official, as a release on www.newyorkmets.com was released. In return New York will be obtaining pitching prospect Zach Wheeler. With Beltran no longer on the roster-it allowed for the Mets to call-up catcher Mike Nickeas to the big club.
Santana rehab start: Ace Johan Santana starts his rehabilitation process tonight in a start for Port St. Lucie.
