The Ratchet and Clank series has been around for almost an entire decade. The formula of Ratchet and Clank has stayed pretty much the same throughout all seven main console entries. When the game Ratchet and Clank: All 4 one was announced, the fans of the series became disappointed with the direction that Insomniac Games took the franchise. Baltimore gamers should not be so hard on Insomniac Games for changing things up a bit.
As already stated, The Ratchet and Clank franchise has revolved around most of the same mechanics since its conception. Ratchet and his friend Clank visit different planets to try to save the galaxy from some evil force. Bolts were the currency the player used in order to buy new weapons and armor within the game. Golden Bolts could be collected to unlock special things that could be used when playing through the game again the second time. Skins are one example of something a player might earn by collecting Golden Bolts. They can make Ratchet look like someone completely different.
Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One uses some of the elements from the older games in a different way. Players have to work together in order to progress through the stages. This can be seen in areas where the Swingshot is needed. In the old games, the Swingshot was used by the player to swing from objects to far away platforms in order to progress through a stage. The same thing is present in the new game, but with a little bit of a twist. Players all need to shoot their swingshots to hang on to one another in order to swing and reach the next platform, In other words, players need to create a barrel full of monkeys effect to make it through sections of a level. This is a good thing because it will actually teach players how to work together to complete a task. In a lot of team based multiplayer games, players sometimes go off by themselves and forget that they are part of a larger whole. Players that act as if they are playing solo will end up preventing the team in achieving victory. In Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One, players will not be able to win by acting alone in cooperative gameplay. Weapons also can take on new elements in the game. When all four players shoot the same weapon at a given enemy, the damage dealt will be greater than if done solo. Players may also earn special cooperative points to get more bolts at the end of the level. Obtaining a reward for cooperating with one another benefits everyone playing. Gamers should not be afraid of actually working together because the result could be bigger than anything anyone could accomplish by himself or herself.
Gamers also tend to be afraid of change in a franchise. This is due to fact that gamers are already comfortable with what they know and expect from a series. The problem with doing the same thing over and over again is that it can get stale over time. All the Ratchet and Clank games have been great so far, but how long will it be before the traditional formula finally wears thin? A new direction for a franchise is not necessarily a bad thing. It shows that developers are more than a one trick pony. They can express their talent of making games in more ways than one. Wanting the same thing over and over again only shows how shallow some gamers can be. Why continue to play video games if everyone already knows what he or she is going to experience? Making the same type of game every two to three years is like eating the same seven meals every week. When a person eats the same meals every week, he or she begins to lose interest in food. The same thing can be said about video games.
Baltimore gamers will hopefully cut Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One a break when the game finally releases in October of this year. Baltimore gamers should play the game for themselves and then judge it. Working together to reach a common goal is something that very few games teach players how to do. This game will be good and unique for the PlayStation community because of the type of experience it will offer players. Gaming as a whole needs to evolve, and titles like Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One are the perfect way to make it happen.
