We directed a few questions toward Ms Ashley McBryde, a singer-songwriter who lives in Nashville.
Ashley, for us to get to know you better, would you answer these questions, please?
Q: Ashley, where are you from originally, and how long have you been in Nashville pursuing a career in music?
A: I am from Mammoth Spring AR and this is my 5th year in the wonderful city of Nashville and I’m loving every minute of it.
Q: Who were some of your musical influences when you were younger?
A. Growing up my family was big into Bluegrass. Doyle Lawson and Quick Silver taught me a lot about harmony.
Q: Who else did you like to listen to?
A: Dolly Parton, Emmy Lou, Karen Carpenter were all staples for me as a young’un. And as I got older I got into Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams and I feel they added a lot to my writing style.
Q: What about today’s influences on you and your music?
A: These days John Prine joins those two and continues to influence me. But even Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell have had a hand in shaping my love for music.
Q. We all know music is the ‘best thing’, but what do you think you’d be doing if not singing and playing music? Which direction do you think your life may have gone in? (In other words, what would have been the ‘next best thing’?
A. If I wasn’t living this dream, I would have finished my degree in Music Education and I’d be directing a band somewhere.
My other option would have been law enforcement. One of my brothers is a police officer, another is a firefighter, 2 of the 4 boys are military too. So if I wasn’t teaching I feel like I would have gone into protecting and serving with my brothers. (That’s a great question. No one has ever asked me that.)
Q. What about your band (or those who play with you), tell us a little about them, please?
A. My Band! Whisky Business as we call it.
On Bass ,
My main man Jasen Martin. He is also our tech guru and has a masters in live sound and engineering; he comes to me from Alabama. We’ve become like siblings over our last few years together. Jasen was also an engineer on the new album ‘Elsebound’.
Deidre Nix also a native of Alabama. Deidre is also the GM of Music and Arts in Murfreesboro. Supplying area schools with the tools they need for good music programs.
Deidre , Jasen and Myself all worked at Guitar Center and at one time we all worked there together! It was a lot of fun.
Recently, Deidre had to miss a show and we added Marshall Weidner to our crew. In her absence we are lucky to have Marshall. He fit right in in our family style band. Both are steady reliable drummers behind the kit and amazing friends.
Lead guitar –
We just lost our amazing Lauren Ellis to the wonderful city of Austin. Sad to see her go; we went in search of someone who could fill those giant talented shoes. We found Andrew Sovine.
Andrew comes from a long line of musicians. His stage presence is unmatchable. Our chemistry on stage is very similar to Johnny and June. In-between amazing guitar riffs we enjoy goofing around on stage and with the audience.
Andrew also has his own band, we know we may not get to make music together forever so we make the most of every single song at every single show.
Q. What about your family, big or little and are any of them in the music business too?
There are 6 McBryde kids. I am the youngest and the wildest.
4 boys and 2 girls. We grew up singing in church. All the parts covered of course because we were all blessed with voices.
My father taught me my first 3 chords on guitar, though he doesn’t play much anymore. One brother, Kurt can play too.
Most of us were in the band in school, but I’m the only one who got “the bug” at a very young age. My mother sings like and angel, Dad too.
They’re all very supportive of the wayward child. I informed my sweet mother at the age of 12 that I’d be moving to Nashville. She has always met the songs I write with open arms. And even though I’m gone a lot and miss a lot of the family time we used to enjoy , they are all proud and tell me that every chance they get.
I couldn’t be more thankful for the way I was raised.
A. Thank you so much, Ashley McBryde and good luck with your music career in Nashville!
