Laws are forever changing. Some of the laws are good ones and some of the laws are considered bad to others. The newest law that is causing a lot of debate in the courts and in the courts of the public is involving whether parents of severely obese, overweight children should have custody of these children. Doctors, lawyers and even groups such as the Journal of The American Medical Association is stating that the rights of these parents should be taken away and given to the other parent in custody battles or even to foster care.
Some are calling the law insane and stating it is about vanity. Others are saying that this law is about saving the children lives because obese children have more of chance of developing heart disease and diabetes.
Since we have no control as to whether this law goes into effect or not, I thought we could just look at ways in which we might get our children moving before they actually become obese or extremely overweight. I thought we could look at some of the local things we could to protect our children and protect our children before we had to worry about this law on a personal level.
Locally, I thought about Yoctangee Park. It is located near down town Chillicothe, Ohio. It is a beautiful 12 acre park that is always filled with activity. It is the perfect place to go for walks, go bike riding, enjoy a healthy picnic and it even has: a swimming pool, six tennis courts, baseball diamonds, volleyball courts, and a playground filled with slides, jungle gyms, swings and many other fun activities for the smaller children.
During the spring and summer months, the local softball teams are always planning. This may motivate your child to get involved in this activity. It is also a way for him/her to make friends with other children who are active.
Once you get your children motivated into some sports, you may even want to visit the local “YMCA” facility which is located next to the Park and discuss the idea of enrolling them into a class or two. They have specialized activities and plans for children, adults and families.
As you begin visiting “Yocantangee Park” on a regular basis and as you begin to take part in some regular exercising activities together, as a family, you may find that your children are beginning to look and feel better. You may even begin to look and feel better, yourself.
This new proposed law is going to create a lot of debate. Many may see many good points from people who opposed and proposed the issue. However, as the law is debated children are the ones who are going to be noticed for their weight more than ever. For this reason, help the children who do not have weight issues now get involved in physical activities and teach them that exercising can be fun. One step that may help you do this is by taking them to a park such as “Yoctangee Park.”
