The so-called unconventional challenges are favorites among fans of ‘Project Runway’- though they’re usually much less popular among the fashion designers who are tasked with creating chic looks from untraditional materials. Tonight’s unconventional ‘Project Runway’ challenge saw the fifteen remaining designers, accompanied by show mentor Tim Gunn, brought to a local pet store for inspiration and materials for their latest fashions.
Gunn warned designers that the judges tended to look unkindly on those who play it safe and use fabric-like materials. Even so many of the designers flocked towards traditional textiles like dog beds.
Even more notable than the strange location and materials used by the designers were the one-liners, many of which are sure to become ‘Project Runway’ favorites. “This is not fashion- this is trashion”, one designer quipped after looking around the workroom at Parson’s which was strewn with everything from hay to wood chips.
Laura Kathleen, who recently made headlines when a photographer filed suit against ‘Project Runway’ over photos of the designers work, had her own quote worthy line, “Classy not assy”. Laura Kathleen would have to scrap her original plan when she realized the dog collar she was forming into a skirt showed a little too much of her model’s backside.
Of course, no episode of ‘Project Runway’ is complete without a memorable quote from Michael Kors, who was recently honored at the amfAR Inspiration Gala. Usually Kor-isms come from terrible runway design. This episode it was a fight between Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia that caused Kors to fan himself dramatically and say “Here we go again. I’m going through man-o-pause.”
Ultimately Bryce Black ended up in the bottom third for his wee wee pad dress that caused all of the judges to lament that they had seen this napkin dress too many times before. Fallene Wells, who many expected to excel at this challenge because of her artistic background, bored the judges with a simple brown and red tube dress. And Josh C, who was in the bottom three the previous week, was eliminated over a dress created from a dog printed umbrella that made fellow designer Becky Ross exclaim, “He put puppies on her puppies!”
Anthony Ryan Auld wowed the judges with his blue, purple, and green pattern, created from aquarium rocks. He took third. Oliver Green and Josh McKinley sparked the fight between Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia, Oliver with a hamster bedding and dog bed textured dress and McKinley with a birdseed beaded cocktail look. Oliver Green won.
Next up is the first team challenge of the season. This will also be the challenge that led up to the first live runway show in ‘Project Runway’ history. For this third challenge the teams of designers are tasked with dressing stilt walkers.
