As a teaser for the upcoming Season 9 of Project Runway, premiering Thursday, July 28 at 9/8c on Lifetime, host Heidi Klum and judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors dropped by ABC‘s Good Morning America near the end of Monday’s show, where they chatted withLara Spencer about the new season. Among the secrets revealed: when Season 9 kicks off, there will be 20 contestants who meet with host Klum, the judges and Tim Gunn, the show’s on-air mentor and challenge mediator. Right from the start, those 20 will participate in a surprise challenge at 1am, wherein they must design a look using only material from their current choice of sleep-wear. An immediate cut of four hopefuls will narrow the playing field down to 16 contestants.
During their segment with Spencer, they also divulged more secrets from the upcoming season. It seems there’s some doubt as to whether one of the contestants, former Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Anya Ayoung-Chee actually sewed her sample garments. Because her pieces are so well-crafted, and she admits to only having learned to sew four months prior to the competition, there’s doubt among the judges. Initially, Kors and Garcia were ready to give her the boot, but Heidi apparently comes to her rescue in the first episode, giving her the befit of the doubt.
Later on Monday, Heidi flew solo as she appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly. During her visit with them she spoke more about the controversy, even sharing a video clip of their aforementioned initial meeting with Ayoung-Chee.
