Instead of wrapping up loose ends in the season finale of ABC Family’s (channel 39 in Phoenix) ‘Pretty Little Liars’ the writers left us hanging from a larger than expected cliff. The season finale started with three of the girls (Aria, Spencer, and Hannah) covered in dirty and wearing their party best sitting silently in a police interrogation room. The majority of the show was made up of multiple flashbacks from no more than 6 hours before.
A told the girls the good Doctor was still alive but her life depended on them. Each of them received a ‘Chucky’ knock off ‘pretty girl’ doll that spoke in a creepy voice when they pulled the strings (irony was not lost on the imagery). It was simple; Hannah had to ruin the wedding, Spencer had to protect Toby, and Aria had to get rid of Jackie (Ezra’s ex fiance). Emily didn’t get a doll… yet. Spencer voiced her opinion perfectly, ‘A was being a diabolical genuis frenemy’. She was giving them everything they wanted. But what they wanted would have horrible consequences.
Aria met with Jackie and gave her a copy of her soon to be published paper and the paper she plagerized her paper from. She told Jackie she needs to leave town. Jackie didn’t take this threat sitting down. Instead she showed up at Aria’s house with her own threat. Back off from Ezra or she will tell everyone about the student/teacher relationship they are having.
Hannah waited until Isobel was standing at the alter with her father and the pastor was starting the wedding ceremony before she interrupted and said she needed to talk to Isobel before they continued (she could have picked a better time for the interruption… perhaps when the minitster asked if anyone had any reason why these two should not get married). When Hannah had Isobel alone she told her about her mother and father ‘hooking up’ when he last visited (for those of you not aware, hooking up is code for having sex). Suddenly the wedding was off.
Spencer decided the only way to keep Toby safe was to break up with him. It was supposed to be a heart breaking scene, but instead it was rather uncomfortable to watch. She simply told him she was lying to him and they needed to be over. The next minute she ran away and cried hysterically under a tree.
On the way to the wedding Emily finally got her doll. It told her to follow the directions in the GPS and she will be taken to the good doctor. Oh… and she needed to go alone. This was the moment fans at home were yelling at the screen ‘it’s a trap!’ She drove up to an old abandoned barn with a car on in the building. It was reminiscent of a horror film where you knew she shouldn’t go in but couldn’t help watching as she did. Of course the door closed and locked her in. She passed out from the car fumes and was rescued… by who we don’t know. But we did see her possible hallucination of her speaking to the deceased Allison. In this hallucination Allison kissed Emily on the lips and told her she needed to decide to stay with her or go back.
Aria, Spencer, and Hannah arrived at the barn and woke their friend. They found the shovel (which was the same shovel used to knock Allison across the skull). The shovel had GPS coordinates and the girls assumed this was where the good doctor was buried. As they were digging up a fake grave the cops arrived and arrested the girls.
At the police station Jenna shows up for a visit with her boyfriend ‘Garreth’. In an interrogation room the two talk and viewers at home get solid proof they were involved in the murder. Another interesting subplot/cliffhanger was the confrontation between Ella (Aria’s mother) and Ezra when he showed up at the police station. He admited to loving her… Ella made the assumption he was talking about Spencer… the camera cut away and we did not find out if he told her the truth.
In the books, Allison has a twin sister Courtney (who has spent most of her life in mental health insititutions). Wouldn’t it be interesting if the twin was protecting the girls while ‘A’ (appearances make us think A is Jenna and Garreth) was trying to hurt them? What do you think will happen next season? How do you think the girls are going to get out of this mess? Feel free to leave a comment below.
