San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced last week that he plans to make cuts on the roster on Tuesday (down to 80 players) and on Saturday (down to 53 players). After Saturday’s game against the Texans, I think I have an idea of what the 53-man roster could look like.
Here’s my prediction for the 2011 49ers team.
QB: Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Josh McCown (3)
RB: Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon (3)
FB: Moran Norris, Bruce Miller (2)
TE: Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Konrad Reuland (3)
WR: Joshua Morgan, Ted Ginn, Braylon Edwards, Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams (5)
OL: Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Adam Snyder, Chilo Rachal, Anthony Davis, Jonathan Goodwin, Alex Boone, Tony Wragge, Daniel Kilgore (9)
There aren’t too many surprises on offense. I see Reuland as that reliable third tight end for an offense that he is very familiar with. I initially thought that the 49ers could keep six wide receivers but rookie Ronald Johnson’s subpar performance on Saturday wasn’t enough to convince me that he was ready to be on the roster.
The team will employ Adam Snyder and Jonathan Goodwin as their duo at center. I expect Goodwin to start there when the season begins. It seems unlikely that the team would keep nine offensive linemen but it seems that they might want to have at least one of their rookies on the team to learn.
DL: Isaac Sopoaga, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ricky Jean Francois, Demarcus Dobbs, Ian Williams (6)
LB: Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, Blake Costanzo, Larry Grant, Antwan Applewhite (8)
CB: Carlos Rogers, Shawntae Spencer, Tramaine Brock, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver, Phillip Adams (6)
S: Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, Madieu Williams, Reggie Smith, CJ Spillman (5)
Both DeMarcus Dobbs and Ian Williams have looked good towards the end of camp and both have secured a roster spot with their play.
At linebacker, Black Costanzo makes the team because he adds special teams value. Larry Grant and Antwan Applewhite both have had god camps and gives depth to the position. Tramaine Brock, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver have gotten a lot of playing time during this preseason and have done enough to earn a roster spot.
K: David Akers (1)
P: Andy Lee (1)
LS: Brian Jennings (1)
No surprises at this department.
PRACTICE SQUAD (Teams can keep up to 8 players)
QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson
RB Xavier Omon
WR Ronald Johnson
C Chase Beeler
T Mike Person
DE Will Tukuafu
S Colin Jones
CB Cory Nelms
The 49ers will need some players for the scout team, so a quarterback, running back and wide receiver are a must. Adding two young promising offensive line rookies will give 49ers depth in the long run.
The team likes Tukuafu and the 49ers are hoping they can keep him on the practice squad. Rookie Colin Jones will get a chance to use his versatility for the scout team. And Nelms has played well enough to give 49ers hope that he could develop into something in the future.
This is just a prediction and I could totally be wrong. But this is my guess on what the roster will look like.
