After Thundarr the Barbarian, Thundercats is my favorite post-apocalyptic setting. The update changes things considerably – the Thundercats are on their home world and Lion-O is a young adult – but overall the changes are an improvement. Snarf doesn’t talk, Tygra is the adopted older brother of Lion-O, Cheetara is a Thundarian cleric, and the icing on the cake: Larry Kenney (the original voice of Lion-O) played the voice of Lion-O’s father Claudus in the new series.
There’s something of a Lord of the Rings feel to this, with the Thundercats more like elves – the proud ruling culture who is baffled by the advent of technology and caught off guard by the “lower races.” The new series style is also distinctly anime, complete with quivering eyes and robot mecha.
The first episode sets up our heroes for a fall, with Lion-O woefully unprepared to take on the mantle of rulership.
