Democratic spin doctor and frequent FOX News Channel guest Bob Beckel may believe his own claim that “Barack Obama is the greatest economic president since FDR,” but he doesn’t have much company these days, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The survey found that the number of liberal Democrats who strongly support Obama’s record on jobs fell 22 points, from 53% last year to 31% now. Even more shocking is the number of blacks who have lost faith in the president’s ability to heal the ailing economy. The percentage, 77 in October, has fallen to just over half.
The poll was released on the same day that another survey, by the Pew Research Center, revealed that the disparity between white and black wealth is at its greatest since the Census Bureau began tracking this datum in 1984.
The poll also showed that the percentage of people who believe Obama has made the economy worse jumped upward six points since October, to 37%.
But if the poll spells bad news for the president, he can take small solace in the fact he is not alone. The survey also found that Americans hold Republicans equally accountable for the dismal state of the economy. When it comes to the handling of jobs, 65% of those surveyed disapproved of GOP policies as compared with a 52% disapproval of the president’s policies.
Another item in the poll that provides cold comfort for the president but even chillier tidings for Republicans is the question of who respondents trust to steer America onto the right path in terms of the current debt limit debate. The president received the support of 34% of those asked, while the GOP earned a vote of confidence from only 28%.
One finding that is rather mind-boggling is that a majority of Americans still blame former president George W. Bush for the current state of the economy, which if nothing else speaks well of Obama’s salesmanship skills. By any reasonable calculus, a president 30 months into his term owns the economy, but Obama’s incessant whining that he “inherited this mess” apparently did its intended job.
