If you have a child heading back to school this year, you may be in for some rough sailing just getting there. Students preparing to go back to elementary, middle, and high school may not be going to the school they are zoned for….even if they have been going to the same school for years.
At orientation on Thursday, August 18, 2011, dozens of students were told that there was no room for them at their current school and that they would be sent to a neighboring school that could accommodate them. Why? The Class Size Amendment that was put into effect in Florida this year by voters under Governor Rick Scott. This amendment allocates for a very specific number of students per class. Any students registering at the school after the quota has been filled will be re-directed to the next available school with an opening.
This amendment will make it extremely difficult for a child to change teachers or schools once assigned since there must be an opening in the target school.
The school board will provide bus transportation from home to school and school to home for any student who is re-directed away from one school to another.
How can someone avoid the gamble of playing with school location? Register early. This means ALL medical forms and paperwork must be turned in as early as possible to secure a spot at the school you are zoned for. Early summer is the best time to complete the handful of forms needed and make any corrections before classes fill up.
Good to know for next year, but unfortunately too late for some this 2011-2012 school year.
