Spain evacuates another 177 people from Kabul in two planes with Spanish and U.S. collaborators

Two new A400 airplanes of the Air Force have evacuated 177 people from Kabul in the early hours of the morning. They are Afghans who have cooperated with Spain and the United States, and have landed this Sunday in Dubai, according to sources from the Ministry of Defence.

They are the fourth and fifth flight of the Spanish Armed Forces to rescue vulnerable Afghans since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan last Sunday. The evacuees are making an intermediate stop in Dubai before leaving for the air base in Torrejón (Madrid), where they arrive to be later distributed to other countries.

According to La Moncloa, the plane is carrying 110 Afghan collaborators with Spain. The rest would be cooperating with the U.S.

The Army has set up a camp in Torrejón with capacity for 800 people, who stay on average between one and two days before being transferred to other member countries of the European Union or to the reception centers of the State, in the case of those seeking asylum in Spain.

So far, six planes have arrived in Torrejón, three from the Spanish Armed Forces and another three from the European External Action Service, which in total have transferred around 370 people.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, reported Saturday that in the Spanish plane that landed at night in Torrejón traveled Afghans who had collaborated with the United States, a formula that is repeated with the two new flights that fly to Dubai.

First conversation with Biden

Sanchez had a telephone conversation yesterday with U.S. President Joe Biden, in which they analyzed the situation in Afghanistan and agreed that the bases of Rota and Morón to temporarily house Afghans who have collaborated with the United States.

Earlier, the head of the Executive visited the provisional camp in Torrejón together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the Council, Charles Michel, who praised Spain for being an initial reception centre for the European Union.
