The bullring of El Bibio in Gijón will not host again the traditional bullfighting fair of Begoña, since the City Council of the city will not renew the concession of the bullring because it considers that the bulls cannot be used to “display an ideology contrary to human rights”. “The bullfighting fair is over”, said the mayoress of Gijón, Ana González, in declarations to journalists, after stating that what happened in the last bullfight of this year’s fair, where two of the bulls from the Daniel Ruiz bull-ranch were called “Feminista” and “Nigeriano”, has caused great unease among feminist and animalist associations and has precipitated a decision that was already foreseen.
“A city that believes in the equality of women and men, that believes in integration, in the doors open to everyone can not allow this kind of thing,” said the councilwoman before arguing that they have crossed “several lines”.
González has explained that the idea was to finish the concession of the bullring of El Bibio and then put an end to it, as contemplated in the resolutions of the PSOE congresses, but these events have brought forward the decision. For this reason, the Consistory will not grant a third extension of the concession signed in 2016 nor will it issue a new call for tenders, despite the fact that the payment of the concessionaire means 50,000 euros a year for the city council.
“The bullfighting fair is over because it seems that too many things were hidden”, explained the councilor, who has argued that if the world of bullfighting is what was seen in the last bullfight of the fair “does not contribute too much to a city like Gijón”.
Gonzalez has indicated that in recent years the bulls were “clearly questioned” and there were more and more voices calling for an end to the bullfighting fair in Gijon and now this demand has been met.
The names of these two bulls fought by Morante de la Puebla last Sunday, August 15th, in Gijón, have generated controversy in social networks and have awakened complaints from feminist and animal rights associations.
