Three men were arrested Friday after a motorist attempted to run down a Cobb County officer.
About 7:30 a.m., a motorcycle officer attempted to pull over a 1994 Honda Civic on Ernest Barrett Parkway, police spokesman Mr. Mike Bowman said. It was unclear why the officer attempted to stop the car.
Still, the driver, later identified as Mr. Justin Lee Clark, 22, of Canton, decided not to yield, Mr. Bowman said.
The officer, who had activated his blue lights and siren, continued to pursue the car, Mr. Bowman said.
Then the driver made a U-turn and accelerated toward the Cobb County police motorcycle, Mr. Bowman said.
“The suspect swerved towards the marked police motorcycle and attempted to strike him,” Officer Bowman said. “The officer was able to take an evasive maneuver and avoid being struck.
“The pursuit was called off at that point due to the danger involved.”
A short time later an officer responding to the area spotted the Honda and pursued it northbound on Georgia Busbee Parkway.
The driver ran the red light at the intersection of George Busbee Parkway and Chastain Road and crashed into another vehicle.
No one was seriously injured.
Police caught the Honda’s driver after a short foot chase, Mr. Bowman said.
Investigators said a shot was fired during the pursuit after one of the passengers accidentally discharged his firearm getting it out of his pants.
Police charged Mr. Clark with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, multiple traffic offenses, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Mr. Jonathan Lee Earwood, 22, of Canton, and Ashley Caudle, 28, of Marietta, were charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Mr. Bowman said.
