Jeff Karstens and the Pittsburgh Pirates started to put their games back on track by collecting the 9-2 win in San Francisco’s AT&T Park. Karstens went 6 innings giving up 8 hits and 2 earned runs while Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez went 4.1 innings giving up 4 hits and 5 runs (4 earned).
In the top of the first the Pirates started things off when Andrew McCutchen walked and then stole second base. He was then brought home when Ryan Ludwick singled to left field.The Giants immediately responded when Pablo Sandoval hit a solo homerun in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pirates then tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning which proved to be all they would need but not all they would get. Andrew McCutchen sent a 2 run homerun over the left field wall scoring Jeff Karstens, who reached on a walk. The Pirates collected their third run of the inning when Steve Pearce scored on a Matt Diaz single to center field.
After the Giants were able to score another run in the bottom of the 4th inning the Pirates got it back in the top of the 5th when Garrett Jones singled in McCutchen to make the score 5-2.
The top of the 7th proved to be another big inning for the Pirates. The inning started with McCutchen being hit by a pitch and then Neil Walker taking the walk to put runners on first and second. Jones then singled out but advanced the runners to second and third followed by Ryan Ludwick taking the intentional walk to load the bases. Matt Diaz then hit a single to score McCutchen followed by a Brandon Wood single scoring both Walker and Ludwick to give the Pirates the 8-2 lead.
The Pirates added a final run in the top of the 9th when Ronny Cedeno singled in Ludwick making the final score 9-2. Joel Hanrahan came in to close out the game in the bottom of the 9th.
The Pirates are off Thursday August 11th but return to action on Friday the 12th at 7:10pm in Milwaukee to challenge the division foe Brewers. Paul Maholm (6-12) will get the start verse Chris Narveson (8-6).
