Pearl Jam is an American rock band often associated with alternative rock, hard rock or grunge. It was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. Since its inception the band’s line-up has included Eddie Veder (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Mike McCready (lead guitar). The band’s current drummer is Matt Cameron, who has been with the band since 1998.
Pearl Jam has sold over 30 million records in the U.S. and an estimated 60 million worldwide. Allmusic considers Pearl Jam “the most popular American rock & roll band of the ’90s.” They are noted for their refusal to make music videos and they have boycotted Ticketmaster and even have filed an anti-trust suit against them alleging Ticketmaster is intending to monopolize the ticket service industry.
In addition to music issues, Pearl Jam has promoted a variety of issues from support for Pro-Choice sentiments to opposition to George Bush and wars. They are members of Rock the Vote and Vote for Change, the band has encouraged voter registration and participation in elections.
Pearl Jam has performed numerous benefit concerts in aid of charities. Mike McCready, the lead guitarist suffers from Crohn’s disease and the band supports awareness of that disease. The band has worked with the United Nations’ efforts to combat world hunger. They have supported victims of Hurricane Katrina, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross and the Jazz Foundation of America. They helped the Memphis Three raise money for a new trial.
Stone Gossard, the band’s guitarist has been active in environmental pursuits, and has been an advocate of Pearl Jam’s carbon neutral policy. In 2010 the band offset their carbon emissions from their 2009 Backspacer tour by donating $210,000 towards planting trees in the area of Puget Sound, Washington. At Lollapalooza 2007, Vedder spoke out against BP Amoco dumping effluent in Lake Michigan. They have been active in the clean up efforts for the Gulf Coast Oil Spill. On April 22, 2011, Pearl Jam was named 2011 Planet Defenders by Rock The Earth for their environmental activism and their large-scale efforts to decrease their own carbon emissions.
Their web site actually has an activism section that highlights what the band members Saw, Heard, Read, Gave or Did. It is color coded by band member.
