Pat Robertson concluded a weeklong series focusing on the end times on August 26, 2011 and answered many viewers questions regarding issues pertinent to signs that the end is at hand. One question in particular focused on the tribulation and rapture. Terry Meeuwsen joined Robertson as he addressed one question in particular, regarding the timing of the rapture to the seven year tribulation spoken about in the book of Revelation.
The caller asked, “If the rapture happens after the seven year tribulation, how do we know when the tribulation begins?”
Robertson answered by pointing to the major natural disasters and events such as earthquakes and asteroids prophesied in the Bible. He stated, “If an asteroid hits the earth, trust me, you’ll know.” Continuing, Robertson stated, “The sun will be dark and the moon won’t give its light. People will be dying of starvation; it will be hideous.”
The Bible first discusses the tribulation in what is referred to as the Olivet Discourse, which is found in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21. During these passages of Scripture, Jesus discusses the signs of the end times. Theologians often disagree as to whether Jesus was speaking about past, current or future events throughout the Olivet Discourse. TV evangelists such as John Hagee, tend to state that Matthew 24 is signifying future events that lead to the second coming or return of Jesus Christ.
Jesus refers to several incidents as signs and birth pangs (or the beginning of sorrows). Signs include some claiming to be the Messiah or Christ, wars and rumors of wars.
Birth pangs included nations rising against nations, earthquakes, pestilence, famines and other events that cause fear to the heart of man. He also spoke about false prophets, people falling away from the Gospel, the persecution of those that follow Jesus and the spread of the Gospel around the world. One of the most specific signs is known as the “Abomination of Desolation.”
