The Queens were in town Saturday, August 27th as JC Events invited Mariah Balenciaga and Alexis Mateo to The Café as the next artists featured in the JC Events live performance series.
Season 3’s 2nd runner-up Alexis Mateo brought her pageant girl vibe and beauty. Backstage, I spoke with the multi-title holder about her pageant life and learned more about Alexis Pacheco, “the boy inside Alexis Mateo.”
Examiner: How are you feeling right now?
Alexis Mateo: I am so excited! This is my 2nd time in San Francisco and I’m having a blast! The Café’s the sh!t man! If you haven’t been here, make sure to check it out. It’s incredible.
E: This is your 2nd time to San Francisco and The Café. You were here in May for the Drag Race Tour. How was being here for the Drag Race Tour different from today?
AM: You know it, it was different at all. There were a lot of fans and a lot of people that I recognized. A lot of old friends and it felt great, almost like being at home.
E: The one thing that has always stood out about Alexis Mateo is that she is always pageant ready. She’s primped, primed and polished. What goes into making Alexis Mateo ready?
AM: Right now, it’s just the way I do. I’m so used to doing it. I’ve grown-up in pageants; that’s what I’ve done my entire career and I still do them. For me to be pageant ready is everyday drag for me.
E: As a pageant girl, what are some of the titles you hold?
AM: Right now, I hold 25 titles. Most of them in Florida. I hold some of the state titles in Florida like “Florida Latina,” “Florida USA,” some of the major titles plus I hold some of the bar titles under my belt too.
E: What is most recent title?
AM: I haven’t earned a title this year because I have been so busy touring but Yara and I were crowded the Puerto Rican Princesses of the Chicago area. It was excited to have a crown and a title without competing. Both of us have beautiful crowns that they created in Chicago. We got invited to the Puerto Rican parade, not the Pride parade but, the Puerto Rican with all kinds of people and it was great! A lot of straight people watch the show and it was a great reaction audience and for me as a Puerto Rican it was an amazing experience.
E: Let’s talk about you as a Puerto Rican drag queen.
E: How has all this traveling been for you?
AM: This is been crazy because Alexis Mateo is somebody but Alexis Pacheco, the boy inside me is completely different. I’m not so outgoing, I’m not so much a party boy. I’m more the quiet, home boy. I love to stay with my boyfriend, my dog and my family. Traveling around – first all let me tell you, I hate airports. Second, I hate airplanes (laughing). I normally don’t get the chance to sleep a lot because usually you finish a booking then have to get to your plane. You never have time for you, you never have time to take a break and recharge your energy. Sometimes it’s overwhelming. I am having a blast because this is an experience that I wanted to have in my life. This is changing my life, personally and professionally.
E: When you’re not Alexis Mateo, what do you like to do to relax?
AM: When I’m not Alexis Mateo, I like to be lazy, I love watching T.V, I love eating a lot of sh!t, I adobe doing nothing. I love to sleep, I love to cuddle and just stay home. I love to stay in my house; I decorate my house 3000 times a day (laughing) and just doing normal things like catching up on movies and shopping.
E: You mentioned a boyfriend.
AM: (Smiling) Yes!
E: I imagine this is a different boyfriend than whom we all feel emotionally in love with you with on the show.
AM: We have been dating for a long time but we have been living for four months because the whole RuPaul’s Drag Race experience left me feeling lonely (laughing) so I had to start a relationship and I’m glad I did, he’s an amazing guy. He’s actually a model and a professional tennis player for Florida’s team and a manager of a retail store.
E: Now all your google stalkers are gonna track him down
AM: (laughing) YES! They all know. Everyone that got me on my facebook personal page knows who he is. And of course, if you YouTube me, you have seen him before; he’s always in the background always supporting me and I love that.
E: What are you doing this Fall?
AM: Oh my God, I’m so excited. I’m so booked! I still have my whole tour going around. I have some upcoming Pride events like South Carolina next weekend. I also have my first time walking the runway during New York Fashion Week September 9th. I’m modeling for the House of Estrada Twins from Project Runway. I am also going to have a Christmas tour with Mariah and Yara Sofia that is driving us nuts because we have to learn a lot of routines and a lot of costume changes. It is taking a lot of our time but it’s going to be amazing.
E: Give me the scoop about this Christmas tour
AM: Me, Mariah and Yara have become very, very close friends. They come to my house and stay with me when they are in town. One of the days when we are completely wasted and watching T.V, we thought why we always had to go visit each other, why don’t we just do a whole tour and the Christmas tour was born. I’m very excited about it because it’s a traditional Christmas party with everyone’s individual twists on Christmas. You will see a lot of jewelry, a lot of dances, beautiful dresses that Yara Sofia has made. I hope I can come back to San Francisco and bring the Christmas show here.
E: How long is the tour slated for?
AM: Right now, the tour is going to start November 1st and finish December 31st. We are so busy; people are already contacting me about the Christmas show.
