If there was any event or venue for San Franciscans to show off their sense of style, a good start was at the famous Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park from August 12th-14th.
San Francisco has always been known to be independent, (beyond) different, and pretty strange—so strange that the city was where the Manson Family began, or Anton LeVey built his Satanist Church on California Street, where one of our government officials, Dan White, assassinated our cherished openly-gay Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone, and even was the orginial homebase for the notorious cult leader, Jim Jones, of the Jonestown Massacre). But on a much better note, San Francisco has always managed to defy all moral (and traditional) convention, respectively… and sometimes crazily. You can’t expect anything less!
To stay true to the local feel, I took a peek at San Francisco’s street fashion blog, The Fashionist, to see what went down at Outside Lands.
The music and art festival was bursting with bright colors and bold graphics. It was literally a hodgepodge of people disregarding “trend-setting” fashion norms and just deciding to wear whatever they wanted to wear. There has been and I think will always be a sense of free-spiritedness and the epitome of the “carefree San Francisco individual.”
From pistol necklaces, red lips an tortoise shell and gold cat-eye sunglasses, to authentic tribal prints, chunky oversized knits, faux leopard-print fur coat, sheer black tights, tasstles, harem pants, boating shoes, lots of different leather boots, to neon pink fedoras, San Francisco isn’t losing her fashion cool anytime soon.
This is what I love about San Francisco. In so many ways are we our own bubble. As a fashion design major, Los Angeles, for instance, is a place I have little respect for. I have traveled the world extensively and have seen real, authentic personal style at its best, and the City of Angels is not one of them. San Francisco is unique, whereas Los Angeles is incredibly into trends and what’s hot now, now, now. San Franciscans just don’t give a… respectively!
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Here are some responses from Outside Lands:
“Honestly, whatever I like.”
“I like ease and comfort and I also like a feeling of nature in my clothing.”
“My style, in general, is probably inpired by my ex-boyfriend.”
Oh, San Francisco… I love you.
