The Ohio Task Force One team includes doctors, structural engineers, firefighters, logistics specialists, specially-trained dogs and Red Cross search and rescue experts and volunteers from all areas of the state.
Irene was covered well by weather experts and hyped up a lot by the media, but in cases of natural disasters, it is pretty smart to error on the side of safety than to be sorry later that you had not taken those precautions. While others are crying that this Hurricane was over-hyped, I suggest that the coverage and safe-guarding was good. Legitimate weather experts were originally predicting that the Hurricane could have been a lot worse. It could have ramped into the worse thing the East Coast has ever seen. It could have been a lot worse. It might have been a murderous Category three Hurricane ripping through all the major cities: Philadelphia, Boston and NYC. Thank Goodness it did not but I appreciate the concern for safety by the governing leaders. At the very least, this storm was good practice for the next inevitable catastrophic storm/hurricane for the east coast. The thing is the unknown factor. Only God knew for sure which direction and at what strength that storm was going.
The truth is that Irene still did do a lot of damage. It caused a lot of flooding. People who disregarded the warnings and who did not evacuate lost their lives. The flooding and storm has destroyed homes. Do not take for granted the major effects of this storm! People’s lives are completely changed, no home, no food and none of their things. The death count so far is near 40. The damage of the storm and flooding is nearing $7 Billion dollars. And nearly 3.5 million customers do not have electricity still. The calculations are just estimations that are still in progress.
As Christians we should continue to help support the recovery efforts through our time, energy and financial means. As with the utility companies, governing city officials and recovery groups like Red Cross and Ohio Task Force One.
Christians groups have also been preparing and bracing in advance for the recovery efforts of Irene. It is neat to look at the different types of relief groups based primarily on denominations. All parts of the Christian Church Body want to and should get involved in recovery efforts. It is neat to see how all denominations can work together in providing comprehensive type of recovery. Continuing in the thought of not duplicating resources and efficiently required after a disaster is Ed Stetzer’s article on how to best help out after a disaster based on his own experience if you are still interested in helping, read his article.
Isaiah 43:2 – When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
