A Theatre Chat top Pick! RENT opens off-Broadway at New World Stages and the Cast Explodes with New Energy, Staging and Lighting the Candle that Jonathan Larson sparked years ago.
RENT is a production and story that will live in the hearts of all who see it for eternity. Of course people will say that producers have put this production of RENT back on stage only to make money. They are right! Theatre should bring in revenue. Because it inspires those who see it and it hires actors, artists and production teams that keep the arts alive.
“Will you light my candle” may have been the question to the producers. Well, this candle is lite for eternity because the late Johnathan Larson who died before the success of the award winning RENT, created a classic piece of musical theatre bringing us together with younger audiences, rock melodies, currect issues and subjects like AIDS/HIV, homosexuality, drag queens and homelessnesss.
Grab your guitar, “Tune Up” and pay your “RENT“, “You Okay Honey”. There is only “One Song Glory” so “Light My Candle”, ignore the “Voice Mail 1, 2, 3, 4, 5” and just “Today 4 U” “You’ll See”. Lets do a “Tango Maureen” down to New World Stages. You may need “Life Support” going “Out Tonight” because it’s un-like “Another Day”. “Will I”, may bring you to tears “On the Street”. So a take a trip to Sante Fe” and “I’ll Cover You” because “We’re Okay” Hear “Christmas Bells” take santa’s sleig “Over the Moon” because we are living a life of “La Vie Boheme”.
“I should Tell You” RENT act two is a “Happy New Year” so listen to “Voice Mail, 3,4,5,”. The message is “Take Me or Leave Me”. “Contact the RENT box office” I’ll Cover You” with your credit card number and you can pay on “Halloween”. Don’t say “Goodbye. Love”. You may think you are “What you Own, but were living in America and it’s “Your Eyes” to see and live “Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes”. “How do you measure, measure a year?” You measure your life in LOVE. There is “No Day But Today” Go see RENT!
The new moving sets, staging are all fresh including every element. Even the melodies down to the personal phrasing od songs. A new take from each performer is brilliantly crafted by the entire production team. Rock concert lighting, clever projection clips bring a spark to this production but the stars are the amazing, talented cast of outstanding singers and actors: Annaleigh Ashford (Maureen), Adam Chanler-Berat (Mark) you think you are looking at Jonathan Larson himself, Nicholas Christopher (Collins), Arianda Fernandez as sexy (Mimi) with her breath taking songs “Light My Candle” and “Out Tonight”, Corbin Reid as Joanne, effervescent MJ Rodriguez as the endearing Angel, Matt Shingledecker voice and acting (Roger) is stunning, Ephraim Sykes (Benny), Margot Bingham (Alexi Darling & others), Marcus Paul James (Mr. Jefferson & others), Tamika Sonja Lawrence (Mrs. Jefferson and others), Ben Thompson (The Man & others), Mike Wartella heartwrenching song “Will I” as (Gordon), Morgan Weed (Mrs. Chohen & others), Xavier Cano (swing), Sean Michael Murray (swing) and Genny Lis Padilla (swing).
