Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Officials will prioritize deportation processes away from those aliens who have little or no criminal history per changes in policy by President Obama’s Administration. Lamar Smith, R-Texas equates this shift in policy to a “plan to grant backdoor amnesty to illegal immigrants.”
The unintended consequence of this policy shift is that a green light has been turned on for illegal immigration into the U.S. from across the world. This public shift in policy, in that aliens who are illegally within the United States and have not committed any domestic crimes, will not be a priority to deport, literally equates to de facto amnesty for those illegally within the United States.
The ripple effect of this publically announced policy will be felt across the United States.
In the Spokane area, aliens arriving at the various Ports of Entry for inspection by Customs and Border Protection Officers need only to make it through CBP Inspections and not return home as required by law as they now have little worry of being deported. At that, wouldn’t it be more effective for a Canadian to cross illegally into the U.S. and be allowed to stay here rather than to do it the legitimate way through a Port of Entry and risk being denied entry?
Koreans, who have entered into Canada legally and then illegally cross the U.S. Border, are often the bulk of arrests made by agents within the Spokane Sector of the United States Border Patrol. These non-criminal aliens are no longer a priority, will be given de facto amnesty and allowed to legally work in the United States.
The starter flag is waiving for more Koreans (and anyone else) to cross illegally and then give themselves up for deportation-knowing it will not occur.
Similar situations have occurred in the past on the Southern Border when administration policy shifts allowed aliens from Other than Mexico (OTMs) to be processed and released after apprehension. As the word of this policy spread back to the countries of origin, the problem ballooned to the point where many OTMs were searching for Border Patrol Agents to give themselves up to.
Cubans know of the wet feet/dry feet policy enacted by President Carter. If a Cuban makes it to shore he is allowed to stay within the United States. If that subject is apprehended while still on the water he is repatriated to Cuba. This policy has been the driving factor for many Cubans to attempt to make it Florida. Many do not and perish on this journey.
Those millions upon millions of poor in Mexico, Central and South America and even in Asia, Russia and other such countries have just been given a green light to cross into the United States. If they are from Mexico and can make it past the Border Patrol’s fine line, they are home free. If they are OTM’s they just need to cross the border illegally and then give up, believing that deportation is no longer a threat.
