Knowing the alarm clock will be ringing early the next morning can sometimes affect how often we get to enjoy live music. Here are a few suggestions on where to spend your time after work in San Francisco and Oakland without jeopardizing your employment status. As it is near the end of the month, and rent is due, I have made a point to find good music that is either free or reasonably priced.
Monday July 25 – Blue Grass Jam
Taco Jam, birthed 18 years ago as a hangout jam session, has become a regular rendezvous for local Bay Area musicians. Every Monday at Baja Taqueria on Piedmont blue grass musicians bring their banjo, fiddle, guitar, stand up bass and other instruments to perform for the hungry crowd. The music is 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and free to enjoy.
Tuesday July 26 – Late Night or Pizza?
Charles Neville and Youssoupha Sidibe with The Mystic Rhythms play the Boom Boom Room in the city for $12 a ticket or $15 at the door. Together the artists blend the sounds of New Orleans, African and Carribean beats and Reggae. What’s special about Tuesday’s show is that these artists will be performing together, delivering a dance friendly non-stop vibe. This is a late night event going 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Oaklanders wanting to stay on this side of the bridge should check out Innerspace at Jupiter. Innerspace is a two man crew featuring Steve Taylor on keyboards and Daniel Yasmin on drums. According to the Innerspace MySpace page, the duo attempts to fuse funk, progressive rock, afrobeat and dub. The music is free to hear starting at 8 p.m.
Wednesday July 27 – Indie Band on the Rise
Yuck and Unknown Mortal Orchestra finish up their two night stint at The Independent on Wednesday. Yuck is a band on the rise with popular YouTube videos and a loyal fan following. The video on the left is Yuck’s breakthrough single “Georgia” which was released last year. Tickets are $13 in advance or $15 at the door. Show starts at 8 p.m.
Thursday July 28 – Piano Fingers
Keep up your strength for Friday with DJ Liebowitz playing Happy Hour Punk Piano at Disco Volante. DJ Liebowitz puts a new spin on the piano bar musician performing an obscure mix of genres. The music starts at 5 p.m. and is free.
