Hidden up among the leaves on Chesnut St. in Emmaus is an old-fashioned sign that reads “Bakery.” Stepping into the shop below is like a step back in time. The simple bakery cases and decor look like they haven’t changed much since 1934, when the bakery first opened. Through the years, it’s always the same faces greeting you behind the counter. That shouldn’t be a surprise either — Emmaus Bakery has been owned and operated by the same family for the last 43 years.
The looks at the bakery may not have changed for the past few decades, but the baked goods are anything but stale! Long-time patrons will find their favorites as well as a few new flavors, or variations on a classic. But before we go any further, let’s introduce the classics:
THE DONUT. The Emmaus Bakery donut stands alone. There is no other donut as large and in charge and deliciously iced as this one. It’s been a favorite with the community — families buy it for a weekend treat; students at the local high school drop by before the first bell to bring in a box to share with their drafting class. You haven’t truly lived in the Lehigh Valley until you’ve had one of these donuts.
THE BUTTERFLY. A truly unique treat. This pastry comes in cinnamon or cinnamon raisin, and both types are covered liberally with sweet white icing. It’s soft and sugary and cinnamony. Yum. If you’re the type of person who feels the typical donut never has enough icing, this is the snack for you!
THE PEANUT BUTTER BUN. Another offering you won’t find at just any bakery. This is a bread bun with peanut butter swirled in between the layers, then topped with Emmaus’ delicious icing. The taste isn’t for everyone, but it’s definitely worth trying once.
THE CUPCAKE. You’ll get no fancified flavors or outrageous prices with these cupcakes. They’re just the right size and come in the original and the best flavors: chocolate and vanilla, sometimes with a few sprinkles, sometimes with some peanut butter icing, sometimes with a little lemon curd filling, but always tasty.
And these aren’t the only treats Emmaus Bakery offers. Depending on the day, cookies, danishes, apple fritters, sweet breads, moravian sugar cake, sticky buns, and pies can also be found behind the counter. And don’t forget to look in the wooden-frame case behind the counter — there are freshly baked rolls and breads, the perfect accompaniment to tonight’s dinner.
The Emmaus Bakery is an Emmaus institution, and no Allentown bakery connoisseur’s mission can be complete without a visit!
