Believe it or not, Wednesday has been a rather slow day for Saints news leading into the afternoon practice session, but there was one roster move. Veteran linebacker Danny Clark was waived by the team and OT Jordan Black was signed to take his roster spot. As much as they may have hated to let Clark go; the Saints are overcrowded at linebacker and need depth on the offensive line for the game this Friday night.
PRACTICE REMINDER: The afternoon session on Thursday, August 11, 2011 will be indoors and closed off to the public.
Pics from New Orleans Saints training camp day 10 – August 9, 2011*
* – No pics yet from today so these are from Tuesday’s afternoon session
~ Few clouds were in the sky today, but no brief shower like on Tuesday so the scorching heat was out in full force.
~ Wide receivers Marques Colston, Jarred Fayson, and Adrian Arrington were all still out. OL Jon Stinchcomb also sat out again along with Tracy Porter, Chris Ivory, and Alex Barron. Cornerback Fabian Washington did return to practice.
~ No full pads today as the Saints are in shorts, helmets, and shoulder pads. Quite a shame because Tuesday’s live tackling proved to be very exciting.
~ With Clark being waived earlier in the day, former Seahawks LB Will Herring has stepped up to play with the first-team defense.
~ This practice did not look as spirited as the past couple days, but perhaps it is the calm before the Friday storm.
~ Hard running yet again by Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas as the offense looked good today. Both broke open a few good, hard runs.
~ Drew Brees was in perfect form while getting everyone in on the act. At one point in passing drills, he hit Lance Moore deep, Sproles on a short pass, and Devery Henderson made a nice grab.
~ New OL Jordan Black is working with the third-team offense.
~ Thomas Morstead was hitting some great and high punts at practice to return men Sproles, Moore, Henderson, and Robert Meachem. Lots of talent in the punt return game…will be interesting to see who wins it.
~ The returning CB Washington was all over the field today as he broke up a number of passes and almost got a nice interception off of Sean Canfield.
~ Returning kickoffs was Sproles, Courtney Roby, and rookie Joseph Morgan.
~ Later in practice, Garrett Hartley went 6-for-6 on field goals with a long of 38 yards.
~ First goaline drill sees Sproles score but Brees sacked on the very next attempt.
~ The offense continued to look great as the ball was moved back to the 40-yard line. Brees used tight ends Jimmy Graham and David Thomas for big gains while Pierre Thomas broke up the passing with a big run off to the left side.
~ Not a few plays later though, Graham made a catch out in the flat only to get drilled by LB Jonathan Casillas. Love that sound.
~ Nice passing drills all around with Moore getting in a number of catches and Meachem looking like he did two years ago with getting open downfield.
~ The final session was a 2-minute drill in which Brees was spot on. He hit Graham a couple of times with the last one being a touchdown reception as time expired. Practice sure started off slow, but picked up throughout.
