Tuesday, August 30, 2011 marked a dark day for many New Orleans Saints players as the team needed to get down to the league-mandated 80 players like the rest of the NFL. Cuts were to be made and while most of them were expected; the most noticeable and shocking by far was that of defensive end Alex Brown.
None the less, moves needed to be made and when it came to Brown, Coach Sean Payton said it was all about his play:
“It was a hard decision. We spent a lot of time on it. A lot goes into it, and I said this to him today, (that) it wasn’t that we drafted a young player at that position. I think you try to factor in all the practice snaps and all the game film. It was something that after going through it all and looking at the timing of it, there’s still that opportunity within this next week that he’ll have a chance to sign with someone else and also that door is not totally shut if that opportunity presents itself here. Nonetheless, it was a hard decision we had to make. He was the one veteran player that of course has been with us.”
~ The Saints also added one player on Tuesday and that’s the signing of kicker John Kasay, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. This move was due to Garrett Hartley having a sore hip and Coach Payton saying they needed to “make sure all of our bases are covered.”
~ A total of 14 players missed practice on Tuesday and Payton is already in regular season form by not giving forth much information as to why exactly they missed. A lot of players that were active for Sunday night’s win over the Raiders sat out, but again no real information was given forth.
Players missing practice:
- Cameron Jordan
- Garrett Hartley
- Paul Oliver
- Chase Daniel
- Malcolm Jenkins
- Pierre Thomas
- Lance Moore
- Clint Ingram
- Tom Johnson
- Aubrayo Fraknlin
- Joe Morgan
- Chris Ivory
- Greg Romeus
~ With Jenkins on the sidelines, cornerback Leigh Torrence took over at starting safety with the first-team defense.
~ Now that Brown was waived, both Junior Galette and Turk McBride started with the first team defense on the ends of the line. Jeff Charleston rotated in and out with Galette.
~ Newly acquired kicker Kasay went for six-for-six on field goal and point after attemps with makes from 29 and 33 yards out. Chase Daniel held for most of the kicks even though he sat out the rest of practice.
The New Orleans Saints have one more practice on Wednesday afternoon before Thursday night’s final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans at the Superdome.
