With only a couple days left in training camp for the New Orleans Saints, they are spending the last few moments in Oxnard, California preparing for the Oakland Raiders. The second to last preseason game is on Sunday night and with injuries piling up, the Saints are going to want to get the most action out of their starters to see just how ready they are for the regular season opener on September 8, 2011.
That being said, it is time to check out just how things went on Friday afternoon in the black and gold covered hills of California.
~ WIth Roman Harper having a finger injury, newly acquired Saint Jonathan Amaya was lining up with the first-team defense at safety. Word is that they really want him to step up into the thrid safety spot or else those rumors of Darren Sharper returning may end up coming true.
~ DE Junior Galette was back practicing with the team after sitting out a few days.
~ DT Sedrick Ellis was not practicing on Friday after being limited on Thursday. Mitch King stepped into the starting spot with the first-team defense.
~ A total of 17 Saints from the roster of 90 did not practice on Friday afternoon.
~ The Saints running backs continued their hard-nosed style as Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram broke off back-to-back big runs early on.
~ In an interesting note, the Saints moved to a “three safety” defense a couple times on Friday. Another note of interest is that CB Patrick Robinson actually stepped in to a safety position at times for this defense.
~ Another little scrum as WR John Chiles and CB Trumaine McBride got into it, but again it was broken up quickly.
~ Ladies and gentlemen, in case you didn’t know…Jimmy Graham is going to be a big-time star in this league and it may end up being known by the rest of the world before you know it.
~ Tracy Porter chalked up an interception versus the scout team. Malcolm Jenkins also snagged one off of Chase Daniel.
~ TD runs by Thomas, Darren Sproles…TD pass on a fade from Drew Brees to Graham in the corner. The Saints offense is looking overly sharp.
Charles Brown lined up as an eligible offensive lineman in the goal line formation. That was different.
~ With injuries to Lance Moore and Joe Morgan, the Saints will be using a combination of Sproles, Montez Billings, Quincy Butler, and Andy Tanner on punt returns.
