The New Orleans Saints opened up training camp on Friday, July 29, 2011, in preparation for a regular season that is only a little over a month away. Some new faces stepped out onto the field at the practice facility in Metairie as fans of the Who Dat Nation filled the stands. There were also a few faces missing, but that all comes due to the chaotic week it has been transaction wise for the Saints and the NFL as whole.
Catch up on all the transaction news for the Saints so far this offseason
Below are some of the highlights and notes from the first day of practice:
~ Saints safety Jonathon Amaya was at practice, but not on the field early on. Amaya did later get incolved in practice after an hour or so. He was acquired in the trade with the Miami Dolphins on Thursday for Reggie Bush.
~ Cornerback Tracy Porter was in attendance, but not practicing as expected.
~ Others not working out today: Charles Brown, Thomas Morstead, rookie Greg Romeus, undrafted free agent Carl Johnson, and Chris Ivory
~ Shaun Rogers got a lot of work with the first team alongside Sedrick Ellis in the middle of the line. Rogers is pushing the scales at 350, but he looks great out there and is just a massive player in both height and weight. Looks like the Saints may finally have a solid middle defensive line. The guy is a true beast.
Rogers on Gregg Williams: “I like him. He brings attitude to your team, and you most definitely have to have that in this game.”
~ Pierre Thomas did practice and ended up having two fumbles on the day. Jonathan Vilma caused the second one. Thomas considers himself to be at about 85% and it is the first time he has really practiced with the football since last season.
~ Both wide receiver Adrian Arrington and tight end Jimmy Graham looked good in pass-catching drills.
~ Saints have waived both LB Stanley Arnoux and long snapper Jason Kyle. They both failed their physicals and were released.
~ @HeathEvans: A lot of questions about what going on in Free Agency? U guys know the Fullback pos is the last concern on any GM’s mind …
~ @Official_Saints: Drew Brees added that “time will tell” how much the offseason work helped but said the team felt very comfortable today
~ Coach Sean Payton on new Saint Darren Sproles: “He’s dynamic. He’s a guy that when you put on the tape he jumps out at you.”
~ Cornerback Patrick Robinson has changed jersey numbers from 34 last year to 21 for this season. #21 was running back Julius Jones last season, and that is a sign that he most likely won’t be back.
~ Out of all the undrafted free agents in camp, safety Isa Abdul-Quddus got the most heat, and that is especially true from defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
~ @garlandgillen: Brees admitted he didn’t know the names of all the guys he was throwing to. A lot of undrafted rookies here
~ @LHolderCBS: Chris Ivory said taking his foot day by day: “I really don’t know (on recovery time). I’m gonna say a couple more weeks.”
