The No. 1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft signed on Friday as Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers agreed to a four-year contract worth over $22 million, all guaranteed money. That is a big step down from last year’s No. 1 pick Sam Bradford, who got $78 million, but the guaranteed money might make the sting of the new CBA hurt less.
Cam Newton will probably be the starter for the Carolina Panthers, who hopes he will be their franchise quarterback of the future. He is also one of the few fantasy football rookie quarterbacks worth a glance in this year’s draft.
The money Carolina saved thanks to the new CBA helped them re-sign a number of prospective free agents as well including Charles Johnson and DeAngelo Williams.
The question now remains whether Cam Newton is ready to lead the Carolina Panthers.
Cam Newton has been successful at every level he has played. After a short stint at Florida as Tim Tebow’s backup, Newton transferred to Blinn College where he won the 2009 NJCAA National Football Championship and was named the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the nation. He went to Auburn where he won the Heisman Trophy while leading the Tigers to the school’s first BCS National Championship.
Now, he will ply his trade in the NFL.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a problem for me. I think it’s just timing more than anything,” Newton said. “Just repetition as far as me knowing what I have to do, knowing the assignment, the alignment and what everybody’s doing on that particular play.”
Newton will battle for the starting job with the quarterbacks in camp, last year’s starter Jimmy Clausen and Tony Pike. General Manager Marty Hurney didn’t rule out bringing a veteran quarterback to add depth during camp.
